Communications between the large number of electronic control systems in the vehicle are implemented by means of a serial CAN bus.

A serial CAN bus system is particularly well suited to the networking of "intelligent" devices and sensor/actuators within a system or subsystem.

 

Put simply it's not a thing but the method of communicating data between sensors on the engine and elsewhere to the ECU (brain of the engine management system).

I know what it is what it does but not how it does it. It's a bit like the M25 at rush hour traffic going in all directions etc.

 

A can bud works by sending information as you say between modules sensors are directly connected to the PCM!
The send data via data segments which start with the module it intended ford I'd tag, followed by the data sent
There are fast medium and slow can bus networks on a vehicle the fast is for things like engine data to ic and abs systems and air bag. The medium is for things like radios wipers etc

Hi can stands for control area network it basically works by sending a series of pulses through one wire to tell the system brain (ecu) what fault,problem,or function is happening for example the door ajar system would usually consist of one poss two wires that run all 4/5 doors ie drivers door 1 pulse pass door two pulses ect and so on
